kaleidoscopic thoughts

Just back from watching all London FA Cup semifinal in a TA’s room. Fair and to be frank, anticipated result at the end! Arsenal lost to a better Chelsea than that we saw in Q/Fs against L’pool. Not many Arsenal fans would agree that lose was justified though, because the Pole (Fabianski) fumbled with Drogba charging. Nobody is to be blamed except the bloody injury list (4 frontline defenders and 1st choice GK). Terry stewarded the defense line against deceptive Arsenal short-passing which had been difficult in that new Wembley. I never expected such a shabby refereeing in the most coveted match hosted by the so called best Football Association. What a disgrace! Penalties, yellow cards, free kicks at least a mistake in every part of the game. The pitch was awful as well which helped little in our short passing. Arsenal! I was praying that luck should be the 11th man in the place of Adebayor. My prayer was half unheard as defense line had to be shuffled too much that I see Drogba as an imminent goal-scorer. Anyways, football apart... Days are just passing by with no emotion of any sort which otherwise should have been either tighter or (p)sentimental. Yeah, indifference took over me. Hope the psentisemites returning on 22nd April would break this mental block. Passed was the VC tea-party which was preponed to 17th without all those job seekers who flew to B’lore/ Hyd. I was almost sleeping in the meet unless some prank named portrayed all the amusing girly characters of SitComs she (we as well) watched. Those were funny few minutes even though am pretty sure that she must have wanted to be serious. We do have fun, right?

I hardly saw anybody with that frightening nostalgic look on his/her face. It’s time for PS stations’ gung ho. Well last week was aaaaaawwwwesome because my close buddies Dayakar (Ohana) , Kaasi (embedded system InfoTech), Manasa (Dell with a tilted ‘E’) all of whom I look upon for their hard work, dedication got placed atlast. Guys! you proved perseverance can never be fruitless. Way to go! Ok, now I understand what the VC was trying to tell us at T-party (with no tea, though). This cool-headedness and trust in ourselves must the best way to beat this recession beast.

Our wing should be credited for ‘holding on’, without bursting as we had spent 3 days and nights without access to the internet. Emi assignments levu kabatti saripoindi...atu pakka political analysts, itu gamers andaru calm ga unnaru... goppee.. btw, April 22nd would be the end to all melodrama of my assignments.

Btw, how many of u could realize the usefulness of ‘phone book backup’ service provided by Vodafone (The Ad shown in IPL2)? Edo post lo already elakki cheppiinattu cheppa..ippuduuu cheptunna.. contacts backup pettukondi. Lekapothe mee kharma anthe inka :)

anatttu.. I got a complement from Hari that I am too used to blogging that I was not lifting my head up in the recent test series. Dude! that was an exam on Management course. I don’t want to let go any thought ‘fly’ away so was trying to hold back. Anyways, blogging is fun.

Cant wait to get going..

What a month it’s going to be for Arsenal so for me as well!! I was too bored last week as there was no BPL action because of the intln break. This prompted me to download season review of Arsenal’s last season @ Highbury which we fumbled at the very last stage against Barca. That’s the really period since I started watching football. Lovely memories, you see.

Anyways, Déjà vu as Q/F is drawn with Villareal. My not-so-wildest hunch says we may bag the Champ.  League this time. Anyway, my bet is on Barca. RVP, Eduardo, Diaby and possibly Vela as well as Nasri may miss out the action at least for a week. How many times would this occur for the gunners? These guys, as Barney says, should ‘shape up!’ City should be thrashed avenging our 0-3 away loss as Fabregas, Theo and Adebayooooooor return. Btw, is #7 Rosicky dead? I’m not sure. Eight games in 25 days, all of them crucial but for different reasons. I am particularly interested for raging against Chelsea in F.A. Cup.

It’s going to be the last, hopefully sweet hectic weeks at BITS. I really need some exquisite and beautiful footie from the club to get relieved from the anxious assignments, tests which have become ultra lite this semester. We are going to be bidden adieu from BITS L 4 yrs have gone so fast!

                                ...Gunner at heart!

hmm.. at last 'Rajasthan!' - continued

Haann where was I? @ Thar, ok!

Sand dunes... only these prompt me ‘Oh, yeah this is Rajasthan’, a mental image we all formed ever since we studied geography. People come and go but there is not even a single mark vividly seen except those made by streams of wind. In this regard, yeah deserts are like motivational speeches! But we are not deserted though; during our camel ride, we came across two young vendors who make money by selling cold and hot beverages (at premium prices). As soon as we climbed down our camels, I spotted the vantage point at a higher elevation and ran hard towards it. We missed football, rubber ball or golf ball for that matter to play with. While some contemplated the view and as people were not interested in running races, we partly filled an empty water bottle with sand and started playing BITSthrow (different from discus throw :P) by dividing ourselves into two teams on either side of hump of sand dune. Great catches, sexy catches, blinders name them..That was playful and will be one of my fondest memories. Local children adopted the game instantly and thus we were happy that we are leaving our mark in the desert, unlike other visitors :D. Sadly for us, the sun was too shy of clouds that evening. And we missed sand dunes’ beauty under sunset. Of course, there are too many bollywood heroines to quench that feeling, aren’t they?

Back to our tents but the tap water is too salty to bath. So we carried that precious sand in our pockets, hair, cameras what not! all the way back to Pilani coz we had no bath the next day as well. I bet nobody would have. Maa hosts ni “emanna pettandra.. gizmo gadiki akalestandi, mammalni thinestantunnadu” ante ‘abhi thodi der mein Gaana-Bajaana shuru hoga, uske saath..’ annadu. Everybody was tired and sat down for some entertainment. First salt water, next some tiffin and chchoi (chiru pronounces that way) have come along. Then started struggle: Rajasthani folk music! Vaayinchesaru. We were told to wait for dancers to come who did a good job. First 2,3 songs were decent but I couldn’t stand anymore. Some 3,4 of us joined me for a chat infront of our tents while others had no energy even to move (guess, some slumbered making an awful lot of audience)

Next was dinner... At last people were rejuvenated and we divided ourselves into 3 teams: (raagam, taanam, pallavi?) for a song identification quiz. Our beloved anchor cum judge Swamy played the tracks from his sony ericsson mobile and out rightly, like all judges said that his decisions would be final. That was an amazing game.  Raagam, spearheaded by Shetty (like Sehwag) cruised to 10 pts while others were searching for points @ 2, 3 respectively. Fortunately for Swamy, other teams picked up and gradually moved closer to raagam. Shetty, Raghuvar, Jeetu ( and nenu kooda)—“meerahhalanthe ga!” at last, taanam comprising of me, Raghuvar, pandari, gaali won it by a whisker. Of course, serious allegations of conspiracy against shetty’s team were made on us. A win is a win no matter how or by how many. And then, we continued to talk about ancient kingdoms, world wars ( I don’t remember distinctly coz I was half asleep) till everybody snored. A lovely night that was. Ikkada hari gadi gurinchi special mention cheyali..’laa-laa-ummm-hmmm-naa naaa naaa’ ilanti rakarakala vocalizations tho patalu gurthucheyyadaniki (maa kharma kaali) try chesadu. Btw,he got one song correct in the whole game but he revealed that he had sung that very song for 4,5 times by then already but incorrectly every time. Nobody could find that until he revealed himself.

Ahaa..what a sound and blissful sleep I had! It seems so many tried to wake me up in the morning @5:30 but I was motionless and eventually, last to get ready. Then, we travelled back to Jaisalmer bidding adieu to Thar. I’ve decided that my honeymoon would be in the middle of thar desert. All of you sighing out “How unromantic!?” lite. Is there any girl reading this post saying “how romantic!” ? plz buzz me on 9602214063. (guys, plz spread the word :) )

Clouds accompanied us throughout our journey to Jodhpur via NH. No ‘ornithology’ till now. But Jodhpur, the Sun City and the Blue City seemed to wipe away that deficit. Good for eyes. Btw, it’s called Blue City coz of the indigo tinge of the whitewashed houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. Umaid Bhawan Palace was our first stop. The most lavish palace, may be because of it is constructed most recently was segmented into the royal residence, the Heritage Hotel and a museum. Gaali gadi bhasha lo cheppalante ‘horrible!’ raja majaaka! The view of this palace from Mehrangarh Fort has been my wallpaper from 3,4 days which is indeed a longer period. As we entered the city, our cab is fined by an enthusiast police constable for not wearing seat-belt. Since then, whenever Hari saw police personnel, he started speaking to the driver in broken Hindi like “ Bhayya, aage chalo. Constable hai”, “seedha maaro” Hari, that was hilarious dude!!

All of us came to an agreement to have a blast at any decent restaurant for lunch. Sukhsaagar was the place. Orders were given table-wise. I was adamant on tasting the Jodhpuri special so ordered ‘khadki pakoda’ (if I spelt it right) but what the server brought was the yellow fluid like curry in our mess which I never touched in 4 yr industry @ BITS. What a letdown! Lucky that my table-mates tasted and consumed it fairly enough. The Indian Air Force, Indian Army and Border Security Force maintain training centres at Jodhpur as observed by some troops moving around in the city.

Next and final tourist spot of our trip was Mehrangarh fort whose location was similar to our Golconda fort, atop a hill. This is a majestic fort with tall walls and grandeur. Wonderful palanquins, royal cradles and furniture were kept for exhibition. The breath-taking view of the Blue city is awe-inspiring. Adjacent to the fort is Chamunda Devi temple constructed in the 15th century. Huge police force was instated. We wondered why..the reason is  2008 stampede (read here)in which 249 people were killed.

Next stop very near to the fort was Jaswant Thada, a memorial. That was perfect spot for taking some snaps with fort and the city in the backdrop. Guess what we left no stone unturned. Later in the evening, some of us left for shopping some debating ensuing elections and some focused on some serious ornithology. The middle category guys were frustrated and waning since we shoppers found one hour was not enough to shop and forgot about guys waiting for us in the cabs. Oops! This created some anxious moments but nevertheless, everybody except Gizmo were tranquillised after tasting the world famous (yes, marvelous taste) Lassi and Rabdi. Sandatlo sademiya la nenu malli pogottukunna ee sari mobile kadu.. oka manchi kurtha..pch! ela poindabba!

Idandi sangathi... motthaniki naa Rajasthan doola teerindi...

On the way, two good news embraced me:

1. My virtual first yr roomie Chakri got placed in some gurgaon-based s/w co for 5lpa. Can anybody believe that he dint know how to access yahoo mail till I created one for him? Njoi dude.  Firstly, learn Hindi J

2. 30th is declared a holiday. So all happies otherwise I had to take an exam as soon as I return.

While returning back to Pilani, I had loads of memories to cherish. Good vibes! J

Btw, I just wanted to inform you all that Drawing money or  checking balances through any ATM across the country is free of cost now.

hmm.. at last 'Rajasthan!'

March has been a merry go round for me. I wonder how I get an MBA degree (leave alone placement) after this semester because little time am I spending to understand these courses. Anyway, 21 lakh conferred APOGEE 2k9 provided us with another awaiting break. Btw, is it better or just bigger? Somebody tell me.

“...this life is often overrated but it gets better as we go...”  I duly agree with this line of a track of ‘3 doors down’.

Bikaner- Jaisalmer- Jodhpur was the route of our trip. 2 taveras, 13 of us! Now, I’ve got a lengthy reply to every friend/cousin who frequently pester me about ‘Rajasthani’ stuff like camels, desert, cuisine, art, artifacts, outfits blah...blah...Dare you ask me now: P

MapmyIndia.com helped us frame our trip and of course budget. Bikaner, the other B of our SBBJ, founded by Bika Rao (strange name, isn’t?) seemed to be a rapidly developing city of Rajasthan. As expected, all the streets are flooded with sweets shops and sandstone buildings. Junagarh fort was our first stop followed by Laxminath temple (devudu karuninchaledu; closed) and some 500 yr old Jain temple. The fort was a feast to our eyes with its Rajput, muslim, and hindu architectures. Artillery collection was amazing, better than Nizam’s really! Our drivers who were as knowledgeable about the place as us, played ‘Tavera game’ around the city junction, had fun though. Suddenly everybody could find two avid cameramen in our crew: Pavan and Gali. Thnx guys for all those memorabilia.

Rat Temple!! - :D yes, u read it right.. Rats reign roosts in this temple worshipping Goddess ‘Karuni’. Thousands of mice, big and small run everywhere freely and fearlessly. Look at those pictures if u don’t believe. Rat-dung is cleaned off frequently, so no worries! This is the most exciting part of my tour is ‘the pradakshina’ around the temple where rats were running and squealing. I was really afraid of them and later I thought they should have been more scared though J We are lucky to sight The white rat and I am eagerly waiting for some auspicious events to unfold that should theoretically follow it J

Off we were to Jaisalmer, the heart of Thar desert and the Golden City founded by Jaisal Rawal. Seriosly, people have no other living but tourism as can be observed. True! As our guide was saying, local people should be thankful to Indira Gandhi for developing the town into a tourist spot during her visit to Pokhran in early 70’s. Guide spoke in broken English but fluently and artistically. Jaisalmer fort, built of sandstone interlocking where carvings were made of single monolithic stone. That’s truly amazing man, no water-no adhesives...As a Civil Er., I am shocked by our ancestral craftsmanship. Where the hell are we in honing our skills? We just pass our time in engineering. Ok, ok. That’s a controversial topic. Let’s leave it.

Patwon-ki-Haveli- I imagined a HAVELI of the Hindi films and latest roadies episode (where Devarshi was ousted: P). But it’s contrastingly magnificent and colorful. Yeah, I am disappointed! I am not good at describing things but certainly, nobody would shy away from living in this haveli. I loved it!

Next stop- a wonderful local Dhaba where food was delicious and cheap much to the amusement of our financial controller Mr. Kunda. After serious and lengthy discussions about whether to leave for the India-Pakistan border or not, we ended up heading to my wishlist#1 The Thar desert. All along the journey, the roads were fabulous. As I learnt in my Transportation Engineering, Rajasthan roads due to their higher temperature variance, require both bitumen and acumen (in the form of engineers) of high quality. That’s exactly what we witnessed out there. Well, the road to thar seems like Dravid’s innings with no vigour but long and steady. We cruised past 40-50 kms at a speed of 120km/hr. All along, we could see the water pipes laid parallel to the road and cell phone towers (remember the maruti service station ad in early 2000’s?)

Camping tents are bright and just similar to any filmy setup. The fact that we were amidst the longest desert in India thrilled us and drove us to take some weird snaps. Katchak!! We heard a call that Camels were waiting for us. oh my, here is a chance to show all those camel enthusiasts at home to drive a point. Every two of us except Shetty (fair enough!) were to ride a camel. That 2-3 Km ride was awe-inspiring. But as Pandari rightly said ‘Movement was exerting so much pressure on the abdomen that the riders may get 6 pack abs by the time camel-ride is over’ good exercise not for the ‘pillion riders’ though who complained that something(s) got ruptured in the process :P

(Sorry To be continued...too sleepy now)

P.S. : Other12 guys, plz leave ur comments to make this post better and share ur experiences
